As a concert pianist, collaborative artist, and educator with over a decade of international experience, I offer a unique blend of elite performance training, pedagogical innovation, and a deep passion for nurturing the next generation of musicians.
From rigorous training at the Royal College of Music to lecturing at Shenzhen Technology University, which is widely recognized as China’s most Westernized and industry-aligned institution, I have thrived in environments that connect European performance traditions with contemporary educational models. My career reflects a consistent mission: to prepare students for global stages by combining technical excellence with cultural fluency.
At Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU), a pioneering institution founded through partnerships with leading German universities under the Dual Education System model, I have been privileged to help shape a music program that integrates European pedagogical rigor with Chinese cultural innovation. The School of Music exemplifies SZTU’s application-oriented philosophy, known as Anwendungsorientierung, through a curriculum co-developed with esteemed German music academies. This progressive program emphasises intensive masterclasses and Western ensemble traditions while maintaining deep connections to China’s rich musical heritage.
Teaching at SZTU required an extraordinary level of versatility. Each week, I prepared and performed 38 distinct works while mentoring vocal students in the refined art of collaborative piano. Inspired by the demanding training of top UK conservatoires, this performance schedule sharpened my ability to interpret complex scores with both technical precision and expressive depth. My pedagogical approach reflects the Western tradition of combining performance practice with scholarly understanding. Drawing from the Royal College of Music’s sight-reading methodology and the nuanced techniques of Lied interpretation, I developed a comprehensive teaching framework that balances technical mastery with artistic expression. My students not only learned repertoire, but also developed the critical musicianship skills that form the foundation of Europe’s most respected music programs.
By blending tradition with innovation, I have helped students achieve high artistic standards and cultivate the adaptability needed in today’s global music landscape. My teaching has become a demonstration of how Western classical values can thrive within China’s dynamic educational context. In addition to performance training, I have designed cross-disciplinary curricula and introduced innovative assessment strategies, reinforcing my commitment to student-centered, outcome-based education.
My eight years in the United Kingdom were transformative. I completed a Bachelor of Music and dual Master’s degrees in Piano Performance and Collaborative Piano from the Royal College of Music, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Under the guidance of renowned mentors such as Colin Stone (1986 Royal Overseas League winner), Daniel Browell, and Tchaikovsky Competition finalist Robert Markham, I gained technical fluency as well as the ability to convey profound emotional narratives through music. I further refined my artistry through studies with collaborative piano specialists including Simon Lepper, Roger Vignoles, and Kathron Sturrock, who helped shape my ensemble awareness and interpretive sensitivity.
My performance career spans continents and cultures. In the UK, I have performed on distinguished stages such as London’s Bargehouse, the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall, Dora Stoutzker Hall, and Birmingham Conservatoire’s Recital Hall. My appearances at the RCM Keyboard Festival and other high-profile events were particularly meaningful. My ongoing affiliation with the Royal College of Music has recently been strengthened through selection for their Professional Engagements Service as a freelance accompanist - an endorsement of my collaborative expertise that enables me to balance pedagogical commitments with high-level performance opportunities across varied musical contexts.
Based in Shenzhen, I continue to expand my artistic profile through collaborations with leading musicians and ensembles. It was my distinct privilege to be the only piano teacher chosen to represent SZTU music department at our admissions open day in 2023, an opportunity that allowed me to showcase the excellence of our piano curriculum to prospective students.
Highlights of my collaborative work include performances with the Longgang Philharmonic Orchestra and my partnership with clarinetist Yi Cheng. He is a National First-Class Performer, Lifetime Guest Principal Clarinet of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, and a graduate of the Berlin Conservatory of Music. Our concerto collaboration showcased a unique blend of German precision and lyrical artistry. I've also performed at high-profile events like the Longhua Chamber of Commerce Gala, where I played for distinguished guests including Yu Minhong, founder of New Oriental Education Group. Yu was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2024 for revolutionizing English education in China. He built New Oriental into a $3.8 billion NASDAQ-listed company, and through its Rural Education Initiative, the organization has supported over 8 million students in need. In addition, I have been actively involved in government-sponsored cultural programs such as the Shenzhen Mid-Autumn Festival and prestigious opening and closing ceremonies for music festivals. My commitment to community engagement is reflected in public welfare concerts featuring collaborations with musicians from China's top conservatories, reinforcing my belief that music should be both inspiring and inclusive.
Beyond performance, I have taught over 150 students from a wide range of age groups and cultural backgrounds. My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that technical precision and expressive freedom should work together rather than in opposition. During my time in Birmingham, I completed structured teaching placements in both primary and secondary schools, working with students at levels ranging from beginner to post-GCSE. These included students with autism and visual impairments. My student-centered approach was highly praised by supervising teachers and remains central to my educational practice.
I consistently earned First-Class Honours in all music education modules in both London and Birmingham, affirming my academic strength in the field. These experiences have deepened my conviction that the creativity emphasized in Western pedagogy complements the structured discipline of Asian musical training. I draw on both traditions to help students realize their full artistic potential. My personal strengths in sight-reading and fast repertoire acquisition continue to inform my teaching, helping students develop the kind of agile, responsive musicianship needed in today’s evolving music world.
I am excited about the opportunity to contribute my global perspective, performance experience, and dedication to student growth to your institution. Whether preparing students for exams, coaching chamber ensembles, or designing curriculum, I aim to create learning environments where technique and emotion come together. In the end, I believe that outstanding music education is rooted in meaningful connection.
